Every year, during August, I cringe at the mention of national holidays meant to celebrate the liberators of the country of Zimbabwe. Each August 11th holiday is marked by a perfectly crafted ramble against Western imperialism and those who wish to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle. The purported joyous event itself is reminiscent of a Soviet era in the height of the Cold War, where comrades are honored for their ever-undying passion to further the cause of the revolution. Yet, I can’t help but swallow the bitter pain of truth that lies in this big façade that Mugabe and his minions throw every year.
The real liberators of Zimbabwe are buried and scattered all over the country, in unmarked graves. The very same people who from time to time like to reminisce about their roles in the liberation struggle executed some of the real liberators from time to time. A sad truth ZANU PF would never want to admit is that the National Heroes Acre in Harare is dotted with the graves of thugs, rapists, thieves and selfish individuals who subordinated their livelihoods to appease their master and looter in chief-Bob. See, legend has it that those who speak ill will or against the old man will see their roles in the liberation struggle diminished, hence hero status reduced to some provincial or district status. It’s a pity that as a young country, we’re stuck in some Soviet era, which the Soviets themselves abandoned years ago in favor of modernization.
So, as they continue to propel and channel this propaganda of preserving the gains of the liberation struggle, just remember they are celebrating their fellow compadres whose resumes are littered with several rapes and murders that will never see the light of the day. We will always see this as another day where looters and murderers gather to advance their distorted agenda of celebrating murderers while the real heroes turn in their graves. We must not be led to believe that these holidays are a justified cause because they are not, they are horrible reminders of the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands of innocent individuals who had the courage and determination to speak against the machine.
